Carlos Calderon, MD, AAHIVS is a board-certified family medicine physician and HIV Specialist serving as Site Medical Director at APLA Health Center Long Beach. He provides comprehensive primary care for patients with and without HIV, with a focus on LGBTQ+ health, sexual health, and prevention. He is committed to creating a welcoming, respectful environment where patients feel heard and actively engaged in their care. As a bilingual physician who cares for patients in English and Spanish, he values clear communication and meaningful connection with the diverse communities he serves.
A second-generation Mexican American and Southern California native, Dr. Calderon completed his Family Medicine residency at Loma Linda University Medical Center–Murrieta. He is credentialed as an HIV Specialist through the American Academy of HIV Medicine and has completed certification through the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) Global Education Institute, with training in gender-affirming care based on the WPATH Standards of Care.
Prior to joining APLA Health Center Long Beach, Dr. Calderon served as Medical Director of the HIV/STD Early Intervention Program at Riverside University Health System–Public Health (Riverside County Public Health), where he led multidisciplinary teams and provided direct patient care across the county’s public health clinics. His work included HIV primary care and prevention services such as PrEP, PEP, Doxy-PEP, and rapid antiretroviral therapy, with an emphasis on integrating prevention and treatment within primary care.
Dr. Calderon takes a collaborative, patient-centered approach and is committed to improving access to care, reducing stigma, and supporting each patient’s long-term health and well-being.
